Toileting can feel like a big step for children and for the adults supporting them too. Every child learns at their own pace, and a little guidance can make a big difference. We’re sharing simple, supportive toileting advice to help children build confidence, develop independence, and feel comfortable during this important stage.
- Make sure your child is drinking 6-8 water-based drinks regularly throughout the day, including the last drink being one hour before bed.
- If your child doesn’t drink plain water, offer alternatives such as diluted sugar free squash.
- Encourage your child to sit on the toilet regularly (approximately 1.5 -2 hours) and provide easily removable clothing.
- Make sure your child has good toilet posture, knees should be higher than hips—foot stools are ideal.
- It is important for your child to relax when sitting on the toilet for the bladder to fully empty. Keeping a toy available only for use in the toilet area can help with this.
- Encourage your child to double void. This means when they have finished passing urine, encourage them to wait for 20-30 seconds and then try to wee again.
- Make sure school allows your child to use the toilet when needed.
- Stay calm if any accidents occur.
- Keep a spare set of clothing and wipes in school that are easily accessible for your child.
